Poker Book Reviews

You will find reviews of poker books listed below. It will take a while to get them all reviewed, as my collection numbers over 40 books related to poker and I have decided to reread every book again before i give it a review.

Please keep these things in mind while reading my reviews:

  • I dislike thinking and books that suggest only ONE way to do things; my reviews reflect that
  • I'm a tournament player - i see things from a tournament perspective
  • The star system is mine and ranges from 5 (good) to 1 (sorry I read it)
  • These are personal reviews. No publisher/author would be able to pay me to alter my thoughts - but feel free to send a check and try
  • I have an slightly irreverent side to me that should shine through

The 'other' most important book on poker to own. The fundamentals of poker in under 300 pages. Chapters on Expectation, the Fundamental Theorem of Poker, Ante Structures, Pot Odds (basic pot odds, Effective Odds, Implied Odds and Reverse Implied Odds), Deception, Free Cards and when to give and get them, Semi-Bluffs, Check Raising, Position, Bluffing, Game Theory and Bluffing, Reading Hands, Analysis a the Table, Game Evaluation, Rules of Play.

It's a dense book. I remember reading this the second time in my life and wondering if I was asleep the first time, as I picked up more information on the second read. I sometimes think I'll never get to a point where I won't learn something from this book. I reread this book every year as I have since learning the game.

It really is a must have book

An update of the book that described Power Poker. 667 pages of poker wisdom for under $30. The History of No Limit by Crandell Addington, 43 'tips' from Caro, Limit Hold' em by Jennifer Harmon, Omaha 8 or Better by Bobby Baldwin, Seven Card Stud High Low by Todd Brunson, No Limt by Doyle, plus chapters tournament play, Pot Limit Omaha, Tripple Draw.

You need to have this book. You need to read it over and over again. I plan on rereading it a few days past my death. If you are playing any type of poker outside of your kitchen table and don't have a copy of this book with well worn pages, your a fish. It is the foundation of good aggressive poker players. It is, in my opinion, one of the two most influential books on poker ever printed. If you own just two books on poker, this must be one of them.

I'm guessing that the number of players that have been playing professionally for over five years and have not read this book is ZERO. On second thought, if I play poker with you now, or in the future, please don't read it...come here little fishy, don't worry the sharks won't bite.

This is the original Super System published in the late 1970's. If you own Super System II, you can probably pass on this book, though the best players in the world probably own both. I still find value in the original No Limit chapter by Doyle, but I started playing and reading this book before Super System II was published. My game evolved quickly after reading the 600 pages of this book.

At this time, Super System is eclipsed by Super System II. It's probably the best poker book ever published that you don't need to own - assuming your have Super System II.
